Originally
constructed in 1910 as a passenger and cargo terminal, Chelsea Piers
stood as a monumental achievement for the City of New York. Ten (10)
years ago, four (4) historic, but long-neglected, piers were transformed
into a major center for public recreation and waterfront access.
Since that time, Chelsea Piers has come to represent the best in
family sports and entertainment. The Chelsea Piers Sports & Entertainment
Complex occupies a 30-acre waterfront sports village along the Hudson
River in Manhattan with over a million square feet of space.
The size of the facility demanded careful management of energy consumption.
Ensuring that customers felt comfortable while enjoying the various
sports and entertainment opportunities was essential.
The Challenge:
Cooling an enormous facility with large numbers of mobile customers,
while controlling energy costs within the budget. Sam Stern, the
regional manager for Global Solutions Network, recommended that Chelsea
Piers pilot test the IntelliCon-CAC in a 300-square-foot
computer room before converting the entire operation over to IntelliCon.
Facility: Sports and entertainment complex.
Location: New York City.
The Products Used:
IntelliCon-CAC -
Commercial Air Conditioner Electrical Economizer
A single IntelliCon-CAC control was installed on a 10-ton Trane Comfort Systems Packaged Rooftop Unit.
The system was in operation 24x7 throughout the 20-day test period that begin in August and ended in early September.
The Results:
Energy Savings: The IntelliCon control
provided a measurable reduction in compressor run-time, with tangible
energy savings and no significant variation in computer room temperatures. “The
management at Chelsea Piers couldn’t believe that an 11% energy
reduction was possible with just one (1) IntelliCon unit installed
on an air conditioning unit serving one (1) room. As usual, IntelliCon proved
them wrong,” said Mr. Stern.

Final Notes: Based on the pilot test results, Chelsea Piers is finalizing plans to convert the entire facility over to IntelliCon. |
